EFI 2026 Conference

The 7th annual meeting of the Ecological Forecasting Initiative

August 4-7, 2026 | Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, Toronto, Canada

The EFI 2026 Conference is coming to Canada

The Ecological Forecasting Initiative (EFI) is pleased to partner with its Canadian chapter (CEFI) to host the EFI 2026 Conference in Toronto, Canada.

CEFI was the first EFI chapter to be formed in 2020. Since then, CEFI has grown the ecoforecasting community in Canada through multiple efforts.

A meeting for ecological forecasting

At the Fields Institute, this international conference will bring together academics, government agencies, industry, and non-profits from across the globe to share cutting-edge research and applications in ecological forecasting.

The conference welcomes contributions and participants from any discipline interested in the foundations and applications of ecological forecasting, including ecology, environmental sciences, epidemiology, mathematical sciences, one health, data sciences, and beyond.

Keynote speakers

James S. Clark, PhD

Nicholas School of the Environment, Dep. of Statistical Science, Duke University

James S. Clark is the Nicholas Professor of Global Environmental Change and Professor of Statistical Science at Duke University. His research focuses on the impacts of climate change and other disturbances on ecosystem dynamics, utilizing long-term experiments and monitoring studies. He leads the Masting Inference and Forecasting (MASTIF) initiative, an international effort to understand changes in forest recruitment. Clark is a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America, and an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Caroline Colijn, PhD

Canada Research Chair, Simon Fraser University, Department of Mathematics

Caroline Colijn is a Professor and the Canada 150 Research Chair in Mathematics for Evolution, Infection and Public Health at Simon Fraser University, where she leads the MAGPIE research group (MAthematical Genomics, Phylogenetics, and Infections in Evolution). Her research is at the intersection of mathematics, evolution, and epidemiology, where she develops new tools to understand the dynamics and evolution of infectious diseases. Dr. Colijn builds mathematical and statistical methods to connect pathogen sequence data to the ecology and evolution of infections, with a focus on phylogenetics, genomic epidemiology, and modeling the dynamics of diverse pathogen populations. Dr. Colijn is well known for her significant contributions to modeling the transmission of COVID-19, which informed public health responses, and for her work on how co-infection and competition drive the development of antimicrobial resistance.

Workshops

Host a workshop & build capacity

Building capacity through workshops

As a community of practice, sharing hands-on knowledge is foundational to EFI & CEFI. Workshops are an opportunity to provide topical training, tutorials, and demonstrations to build and strengthen an ecological forecasting community of practice. Workshops will be 1.5 hours in length and interspersed in the schedule on August 5-7, 2026.

Call for workshop proposals ends January 23, 2026.

Call for workshops is now closed.

Working groups

Organize a working group meeting

Dedicated time for working group meeting

Working group sessions provide dedicated in-person and extended time (half or full day) to work on specific projects with others in the EFI & CEFI community. These sessions are open to all conference participants, and will take place on August 4, 2026.

Call for working group meetings ends January 23, 2026. Both new and existing working groups are encouraged.

Call for working group meetings is now closed.

Abstracts

Submit your abstract for poster or presentation

Poster and presentation sessions

A space to share and learn about on-going research on ecological forecasting via oral presentations and poster sessions.

Call for abstracts ends April 15, 2026. We welcome contributions from across disciplines covering the foundations and applications of ecological forecasting. Only one abstract submission can be submitted per person.

The call for abstracts is now closed.

Travel scholarships

Apply for travel scholarship

Supporting the community with travel scholarships

EFI & CEFI are proud to offer travel scholarships to fully or partially cover accommodation, transportation, and per diem costs. Anyone can apply for travel scholarships, but we especially encourage travel scholarship applications from students, early career and/or underrepresented groups.

Applications are open until April 15, 2026.

Applications are now closed.

Handbook

Everything you need to know in one place

The EFI 2026 Conference Handbook brings together all the information about the meeting: from key dates, proposal submissions and registration details, to travel, accommodation and other tips for visiting Toronto.
